About

I am a junior at The George Washington University majoring in economics with minors in sustainability and physics. I spent ten days abroad with Syracuse University enrolled in a seminar that explores how Scandinavian countries embrace sustainability and environmental justice in both urban and rural settings.

This seminar, called "Sustainability on Trial: Environmental Justice in Northern Europe," took me and twenty other students to Stockholm, Sweden; Ivalo, Finland; and Copenhagen, Denmark. We participated in a variety of study visits to learn about topics such as sustainable city planning, environment-based culture, and ecotourism.

Each student in the class was assigned a role (activist, policymaker, or scientist) and a resource. I was assigned the role of oil and natural gas scientist and was particularly interested in how the places we visited minimize the use of fossil fuels in order to decrease emissions and conserve resources while maintaining their modern lifestyles.

This blog is a creative report to be submitted as a project for the seminar. The intention of this website is to share some of the knowledge I obtained from this seminar with a broad audience.

While there are many definitions of sustainability and environmental justice, I will use the three pillars of sustainability and the three dimensions of environmental justice as a framework for my blog, categorizing each post under one of the six total specifications..
